Discovery Education

We are pleased to announce The NCTIES and the Discovery Channel/Discovery Education will host a sneak preview of LIFE with a special introduction by International Speaker and Education Innovator Hall Davidson.

Discovery Channel will preview the trailer for Discovery Channel's new LIFEseries airing on March 21st. LIFE is the follow up to Discovery's acclaimed Planet Earth series, and will be available to educators on Discovery Education Streaming PLUS the day after each episode airs on Discovery Channel!

In addition, Hall Davidson will be conducting two featured speaker sessions at NCTIES!

Hall Davidson taught middle and high school English, mathematics, Spanish, and bilingual mathematics. He left the classroom to teach math on television in Los Angeles on an Emmy-winning program and spent 20 years at PBS stations teaching and leading staff developments in person and on-air. While producing television series on education and technology, he led a media consortium serving 17 districts and 400,000 students. He frequently contributes articles to national educational publications. With a team he founded Kitzu.org, a resource of free online kits to encourage project-based learning with media. He served on the board of Computer-Using Educators for six years and consulted for media corporations and professional organizations. For a dozen years he coordinated the nation’s oldest student media festival, the California Student Media Festival. He was site chairperson at his children’s elementary school where the categorical budget required his signature. He joined Discovery Education in 2005 where he blogs, creates webinars, and works in educational partnerships as a director of the Discovery Educator Network, connecting thousands of teachers nationwide. He has spoken about technology and education to audiences around the world.

Clif Mims added as a Featured Speaker

Clif Mims is a native of the Mississippi Delta and has more than 16 years of teaching experience.  He taught elementary and middle school students and coached basketball and math teams to numerous championships.  He later became a faculty member at the University of Georgia while simultaneously earning his Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from UGA.  Dr. Mims became an assistant professor of elementary mathematics at the University of Mississippi in 2003. Clif joined the University of Memphis' Instructional Design and Technology faculty in 2005 and now serves as Program Coordinator.

His research interests are related to the effective integration of technology with the processes of teaching and learning, especially in teacher education.

Clif is an avid fan of the Mississippi State University Bulldogs and enjoys tennis, camping, fishing, movies and television. He and his wife are the parents of three children.

Grants

Three (3) $3000 Grants will be awarded for innovative, student-involved projects, which effectively use technology. Each grant recipient will receive a check for $3000 and agree to present at the 2011 NCTIES Conference at the Raleigh Convention Center March 2nd – 4th. The winner will receive registration and one night’s lodging in addition to the check for the school. At that conference each winner will present a session concerning the product/project that was aided by the grant money.
